Van Dijk reaches peak saltiness in World Cup admission after he floors Argentina star

Virgil van Dijk was very bitter after the Netherlands’ penalty shootout defeat to Argentina on Friday.

His side came back from 2-0 down through a Wout Weghorst brace to take what was a fiery game to extra-time and a penalty shootout, in which Emiliano Martinez proved to be the hero for Argentina.

Van Dijk stepped up first for the Netherlands and saw his tame attempt saved and was at his salty best after the game.

Pressed to comment on whether Argentina will go on to win the World Cup, Van Dijk muttered: “I don’t care. I won’t watch any more.”

The Liverpool star was engaged in plenty of the on-field aggro and and one point shoved Leandro Paredes to the ground.

Nathan Ake was desperately trying to get the ball forward in search of an equaliser when he was cynically fouled by Paredes, who was trying to relieve pressure on his side and waste time.

Paredes responded to the free-kick being given by smashing the ball into the Dutch dugout, causing the substitutes to swarm the field.

The Dutch squared up to the Argentinians before Van Dijk bowled in and decked Paredes.

The centre-back was shown a yellow card by Antonio Mateu Lahoz, who doled out that same punishment on a further 14 occasions in the game.

The Argentina players were similarly riled up despite the win, celebrating in their opponents faces, and captain Lionel Messi was still fired up in his post-match interviews.

The Paris Saint-Germain star couldn’t resist having a go at two-goal Netherland hero Wout Weghurst, shouting to the striker off-camera: “What are you looking at fool/stupid?. Get back there.”

Messi, who was named as the Player of the Match, was also pictured cupping his ears in the direction of Louis van Gaal and ws critical of the football the Netherlands boss adopted towards the end of the game.

He said: “Van Gaal says that they play good football, but what he did was put tall people and hit long balls.”
