SACRAMENTO – Cal women’s soccer players and CalHOPE Courage Award honorees Amaya and Anysa Gray visited the Governor’s Mansion in Sacramento to attend a meeting with the Governor’s Advisory Council on Physical Fitness & Mental Well-Being on Monday afternoon. The Council is co-chaired by the First Partner, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and Pro Football Hall of Famer and four-time Super Bowl Champion Ronnie Lott, who is the spokesperson for CalHOPE. The Council’s membership includes mental health professionals and former professional athletes who advise Governor Gavin Newsom on strategies to promote physical health and mental wellness among the youth of California. Monday’s event took place in a hybrid setting with some councilmembers on Zoom and some in attendance at the Governor’s Mansion. They engaged in an open dialogue with the group, sharing about their experiences overcoming the obstacles they faced in their upbringing.

“I’m really honored to have received this award because it shows our ability to overcome adversity,” Anysa said in her introductory speech to the council. “I’m really proud of us for how far we’ve come”

“I’m proud of how we were able to share our story and be inspiring to other children in our city [of East Palo Alto],” Amaya said to the council. “Not many people have been able to get out of our city and do great things, so it’s really a privilege to be that role model for kids in our community.”

The councilmembers, including two-time Olympic gold medalist in women’s soccer Brandi Chastain, offered affirmation and encouragement to the Gray twins for their resilience, and recognized them as role models of the community.
