The Tradition Begins Again After Home Opener Win

Mesquite, TX – The Tradition Began Again on December 3, 2022, at Mesquite Arena. The Mesquite Outlaws win Home Opener 2-1 against the Monterrey Flash.

After both teams having a two-year hiatus, the anticipation for both teams to re-enter the Major Arena Soccer League, was at an all-time high. Flash bringing many notable players such as Walter Ayovi, Israel Jimenez, and returning player Brayan Aguilar.


In the first minute and nine seconds, second year forward, Axel Chakounte, scores the first goal of the game and season, with an assist from Outlaws veteran Brenden Lee. Continuing in the first quarter, both teams had back and forth shots, Outlaws trying to keep the lead, and the Flash trying to get on the board. Outlaws dominated with 8 shots, Flash trailing with 2.

Second quarter continued the same, both teams continued to take back and forth shots. Mesquite goalkeeper, Eduardo “Pollo” Cortes, making many amazing saves, keeping the score 1 to 0 at halftime.

Luiz Morales got his first goal of the season, four minutes in to the third quarter. Morales, was the 2021-2022 MASL Rookie of the Year, that made a huge impact in the league as a young rookie. He had spent his offseason playing with the United States Men’s National Futsal Team, with fellow teammates David Ortiz, Sebastian Mendez, and Erik Macias.

Going into the fourth and final quarter of the night’s game against the Flash, Outlaws were up 2 to 0. Shots continued both sides, and eventually Flash pulled goalkeeper Diego Reynoso for sixth attacker. Outlaws were less than two minutes from a shutout, when Flash player Edgar Flores scored, assisted by Bryan Aguilar.

The Mesquite Outlaws Home Opener ended in a low scoring, but great, 2 to 1 win against the Monterrey Flash.

When asked about the winning results from the game, Axel Chakounte commented, “Coming into this game we knew it was going to be a big test with Monterrey being a powerhouse and us being a young team.”

“We also knew that we had the tools and preparation to compete and possibly surprise them, which I think we did, so it just came down to believing in ourselves and working hard.”
