Ohio State to Face Wake Forest In NCAA Opener Thursday – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State has earned an at-large selection to the 2022 NCAA Tournament and face Wake Forest in the opening round of the tournament Thursday in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The match time and broadcast information will be announced in the coming days.

This will the Buckeyes’ 11th NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2015. It is also the first NCAA Tournament appearance at Ohio State for Brian Maisonneuve as head coach of the Buckeyes.

The last Ohio State road match in the tournament was at Stanford Nov. 29, 2015, a 3-1 loss to the No. 7 Cardinal in Palo Alto, Calif.

Ohio State advanced to the College Cup Final in 2007, falling to No. 1 Wake Forest, 2-1, in Cary, North Carolina.

“It really is a gift when you make it into the NCAA tournament,” Maisonneuve said. “This is what you play for and you have to enjoy every single day. The guys had a goal to make the NCAA Tournament. I am so proud of them in so many ways.”

Ohio State is 10-3-5 overall entering NCAA competition after it tied for second in the Big Ten with a 4-2-2 mark. The Buckeyes went 1-1 in the Big Ten Tournament, winning at home vs. Michigan State before a loss in the semifinals at Rutgers, who went on to win the postseason title Sunday over Indiana.

Ohio State junior Laurence Wootton and senior Xavier Green led the Buckeyes with 12 points. Wootton scored a team-high five goals on the year to go with two assists. Green found the back of the net four times with an equal number of assists.

The Big Ten Conference announced its 2022 Award winners Nov. 4. Ohio State was well represented. Wootton (Midfielder of the Year) and senior Keagan McLaughlin (Goalkeeper of the Year) also garnered First Team All-Big Ten honors. Green and sophomore Anthony Samways were named Second Team All-Big Ten by the league coaches. Rookies Tanner Creech and Luciano Pechota (unanimous) earned spots on the All-Freshman team while senior Brayden Durbin was named Ohio State’s Sportsmanship Award honoree.
