Xavi Hails Retiring Gerard Pique: 'He's a Barca Legend'

Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez has labelled retiring star Gerard Pique as a “Barca legend” after his final game at Camp Nou where they won 2-0 over Almeria on Saturday.

Earlier this week, Pique announced his intention to retire mid-season during the World Cup break and he was given an emotional farewell on Saturday.

Pique was substituted off in the 83rd minute, offering fans the opportunity to stand and give him an applause, while Xavi heaped praise on him after the game.

“It was a historic night for everyone, but mainly for Gerard,” Xavi said. “He had a great game and we wanted to send him off in the best possible way.

“The bigger the game, the better he performs. Ive already told him he is a Barca legend, and we are very thankful to him.”

The 35-year-old defender has played more than 600 times for Barcelona, winning La Liga eight times, along with three UEFA Champions League titles.

The ex-Manchester United man has numerous individual accolades including being in several Team of the Years.

Pique may still play in Barca’s midweek clash away to Osasuna in the league before retiring.

“Theres so much love and passion between Barca and I, but its time to leave, and give some space,” he said.

“Im convinced in the future Ill be here again. I left before, and came back. Its not a farewell. I was born here and Ill die here, I will always be Barca.”
