Callum Wilson reveals Miguel Almiron reaction to Jack Grealish jibe

Miguel Almiron celebrates his goal with Callum Wilson

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has revealed how Miguel Almiron reacted to Jack Grealish’s comments in May.

During Manchester City’s Premier League title parade, Grealish was a bit tipsy and decided to take the p*ss out of one of his teammates by saying they “played like Almiron” in their title-clinching victory against Aston Villa.

The England international compared one of Riyad Mahrez’s worst performances for the Citizens to Almiron’s general standard.

Although it was said in jest, it was a pretty insulting thing to say about a fellow professional.

Grealish – who joined City for £100m from Aston Villa last year – may want to look a little closer to home.

Since his jibe at Almiron, the 27-year-old has scored one goal and provided no assists in 14 matches, meanwhile, the Paraguayan winger has been on top form.

Admittedly, the tireless Newcastle player has not been great since moving to England, but you could say that he has taken great motivation from Grealish’s comment.

Finally proving his worth to the Geordie faithful, the baby-faced 28-year-old has scored seven Premier League goals this term.

This includes a goal in his last three appearances as Newcastle sit fourth in the league with only one defeat all season.

Almiron – who has six goals in as many games – has remained silent on the subject.

However, his team-mate, Callum Wilson, has recently discussed it on the Footballer’s Football Podcast.

It appears that Almiron is not too bothered, but Grealish has probably awoken something within the former Atlanta United star.

Wilson admitted that he didn’t know what happened until recently and that Almiron “just shrugged his shoulders” when asked what he thought.

When asked if the Paraguayan was “fuming with what happened” with Grealish, Wilson said: “Well, obviously that comment was made and I didn’t even realise that comment had been made until recently, and I was like ‘what has been said?’

“I was oblivious and they were saying what Jack said.

“He’s just like South American, he’s such a nice guy, happy, he didn’t really comment on it, he just shrugged his shoulders.

“I imagine internally he’s used it as motivation, but he hasn’t said anything to me.”

Wilson has reportedly been included in Gareth Southgate’s 55-man provisional squad for the World Cup.

The England manager has included many players who are either uncapped or without a cap for several years.
