Southgate sends assistant to watch Liverpool defender who is back in contention for England squad

Liverpool's Joe Gomez battles with Manchester City's Erling Haaland

Reports have claimed that Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is being considered for the England squad by Gareth Southgate.

Time is now ticking for Southgate to make his final call on the squad and Gomez has come into form at just the right point.

Southgate faces a difficult decision when it comes to picking his defence. Given the recent injuries to Reece James and Kyle Walker, their place in the squad has now been cast into doubt.

A report from the Sun claims that Gomez is now being seriously considered for the latest England squad.

The report explains that: ‘The Three Lions boss remains an admirer of the Reds defender, who can operate in central defence or at right-back.

‘Southgate’s assistant Steve Holland was at Anfield to watch Gomez perform impressively against City goal machine Erling Haaland on Sunday, while Southgate had been at the Aston Villa v Chelsea match.’

When Gomez has started in the league, Liverpool have only conceded an average of 0.6 goals per game.

Liverpool fans have been quick to praise Gomez and his composed displays as of late.

The 25-year-old has made 11 appearances for England in total. His last appearance for Southgate’s side came back in 2020.

Southgate now faces quite the conundrum when it comes to selecting his defence.

Harry Maguire faces a race against time to be fit for the World Cup and he has only started two Premier League matches.

Fikayo Tomori is still on the fringes of the squad and has so far struggled to make an impact on the England manager.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s form has also been hotly debated given his inconstant start to the season. Considering England’s current options in his position, he still has a…
