No. 18 Trojans Ride Two Early Goals to Victory at No. 19 Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 18 USC women’s soccer team rode two early goals to victory over No. 19 Cal on Friday night, getting a goal and an assist from Kayla Colbert in the contest.
 
The Trojans picked up their third win over a ranked opponent as USC improves to 9-2-1 overall and 5-1-0 in Pac-12 play. Cal falls to 8-4-3, 3-3-0.
 
The Trojans scored both their goals within the first 20 minutes of play, getting a highlight reel strike from Kayla Colbert to open the scoring in the third minute. Colbert sent a shot in from at least 25 yards out and then assisted on the second goal in the 18th minute when she set up Simone Jackson with a long ball forward.
 
It was the first time since the start of Pac-12 play that Cal was held scoreless as USC picked up its fifth shutout of the year. Anna Smith made a pair of saves in the game, playing all 90 minutes in goal.
 
GOALS
3′ – USC: Kayla Colbert (assisted by Helena Sampaio, Croix Bethune) – Bethune sent a short corner to Sampaio and Sampaio immediately found Colbert outside the top of the area where she sent a shot into the upper left corner from 25 yards out.
 
18′ – USC: Simone Jackson (assisted by Kayla Colbert) – Colbert sent a long ball ahead to Jackson who ran onto it into the area and scored with a one-touch shot off the bounce.
 
UP NEXT
The Trojans stay on the road next week, heading to Utah on Thursday and Colorado on Sunday. Both games will be shown live on the Pac-12 Network.
