UW loses a tough match at No. 25 Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The University of Wisconsin women’s soccer team continued on its final stretch of away games in Happy Valley against the No. 25 Penn State Nittany Lions. On a chilly Thursday evening, the Badgers took on one of the best teams in the country and came up short falling 3-0.

Although not a trend that Wisconsin will want to continue, the Badgers allowed its opponent to score yet another early goal. Penelope Hocking, a transfer from USC who was the all-time leader in goals scored at her previous school, grabbed her fifth goal of the season in the sixth minute of the game after Katie Wiesner went down the field splitting defenders to set up the forward for a one-touch goal.

Shortly after the early lead was claimed by the Nittany Lions, Emma Jaskaniec went down with an injury that shifted the tone of the game for Wisconsin. The heart and soul for the Badgers, with 10 goals on the season, was taken out of the game with an injury that silenced the crowd and upset the stomachs of Badger fans everywhere. 

The Nittany Lions put up another score 29 minutes into the game from Payton Linnehan after Hocking found the senior in the run of play just outside the 18-yard box. 

Wisconsin put up three shots in the second half, with Natalie Viggiano putting the only one on target, and continued to pressure the opponents hard. Yet with Elle Kershner scoring an unassisted goal late into the match with only three minutes left to play, the game fell out of reach for the Badgers.
