Bears Host USC In Last Of Three Consecutive Home Matches

BERKELEY – No. 19 California women’s soccer takes on No. 18 USC this Friday at 4 p.m. PT at Edwards Stadium, looking to extend its three-game winning streak. The match will air on the Pac-12 Network.

The Bears are coming off three consecutive wins against fellow Pac-12 schools Arizona, then-No. 21 Washington State and Washington. Cal outscored both the Cougars and the Huskies 2-1 this past week, earning the team its first national ranking of the season with United Soccer Coaches placing them 19th in its weekly national rankings.

Keely Roy contributed three of the four goals last week and remains the top goal-scorer this season for Cal with her eight total. She now ranks fifth in the conference for goals scored. Roy received numerous accolades following her stellar performance, including Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week and a spot on TopDrawerSoccer’s team of the week.

Hannah Cooper logged her first-ever goal in collegiate competition when she placed a shot into the right side of Washington’s goal off of a pass from Ari Manrique.

Angelina Anderson and Sydney Collins once again led the defense, holding off Washington State for nearly 86 minutes before conceding a goal and shutting out Washington for 65 minutes after only allowing one goal in the first half. Anderson made five saves against Washington, including one impressive diving stop that crucially maintained a tie-game. Collins also had a huge defensive save in the game against the Huskies when she guarded an empty goal and made a perfectly-timed header to block a shot and hold onto Cal’s 2-1 advantage.

The Bears (8-3-3, 3-2 Pac-12) now take on the Trojans (8-2-1, 4-1 Pac-12), their 27th time doing so since 1995. Cal currently trails the series with a 10-15-2 record. USC comes to Berkeley following their split weekend hosting the Arizona Schools. The Trojans fell to the Wildcats 0-1 and beat the Sun Devils 2-0. This will be the third home match in a row for the Bears before they hit the road for two against the Oregon schools.
