Virginia Tech host No. 13 Virginia in Commonwealth Clash


BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech women’s soccer team travels back to Blacksburg to take on No. 13 Virginia on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 8:00 p.m. Thursday’s match against Virginia will air live on ACC Network. Virginia Tech trails the home series against Virginia 2-6.

 Against Those Who are Ranked (9-4-1, 3-3): In their last home match against #3 North Carolina, Virginia Tech upset the Tar Heels 2-1. North Carolina held the lead at the half 1-0 while keeping the Hokies down to one shot in the first 45 minutes. Tech turned the tide in the last remaining third of the match as Taylor Bryan scored her second goal of the season in the 73rd match. Tori Powell sealed the deal for the Hokies scoring the game-winning goal in the 85th minute. Powell’s goal earned her the title of ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week. 

Earlier this season, Tech upset No. 22 NC State Wolfpack in Raleigh with a 1-0 victory. Taylor Price scored the game-winning shot against the Wolfpack with an assist from Natalie Mitchell in the 62nd minute. Lauren Hargrove blocked the Wolfpacks’ single shot on goal to record her fourth clean sheet of the season. 

• No. 13 Cavaliers (10-2-2, 3-2-1): Virginia returns to the pitch after a 1-0 loss against #3 Florida State at home last Thursday, Oct. 6. Despite having a 21-6 shot advantage, the Cavaliers were unable to score after the Seminoles took the lead in the first minute of the match. The Cavaliers have faced two shutout losses this season, the first being against #18 Notre Dame 1-0. Virginia most recently played against Syracuse on Sunday ending in a tie 2-2. Syracuse earned the first goal of the game in the second minute of the match. Virginia took over the lead with 27 minutes left in the game but gave up the equalizer to Syracuse in the 89th minute. Virginia’s scoring offense is ranked 14th in the NCAA, averaging 2.50 goals per game. In goals against, the Cavaliers are ranked tied for 12th averaging .500.  

Keep Your Eyes On: Taylor Price scored her seventh goal of the season in a conference game against Clemson on Sunday. Price is ranked tied for sixth in the ACC for goals this season, right behind Haley Hopkins from Virginia tied for third with eight goals.
