Evans, Koehler Earn Weekly Women’s Soccer Accolades

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women’s soccer player Camryn Evans garnered weekly accolades as a Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week and landed an honorable mention spot on the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week, while Courtney Koehler took home Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, both organizations announced on Tuesday.

Evans becomes only the third MSU player in program history to receive weekly honors from TopDrawerSoccer, and the first since senior defender Raegan Cox took home National Team of the Week accolades last season. The Fenton, Michigan, native Evans led the charge in Michigan State’s upset of No. 19 Colorado last week, posting her first career hat trick thanks to two scores in the run of play in addition to a penalty kick goal in the waning moments of the game.

The award was the first offensive player recognition at MSU since Gia Wahlberg took home the standalone award following a four-goal outburst against Marshall in the 2019 campaign. Evans’ hat trick made her only the fourth player in program annals to notch a trio of goals in a game on Old College Field, joining the likes of Wahlberg, Hannah Jones and newly-inducted Michigan State Athletics Hall-of-Famer Laura (Heyboer) Heethuis.

Koehler becomes the first player in Michigan State history to take home a pair of Freshman of the Week accolades, notching her second honor following a two-assist effort in the win over the 19th-ranked Buffaloes on Sunday. Koehler, a native of The Woodlands, Texas, has compiled six total points on the young season despite missing the first two contests of the year. Her debut against Central Michigan saw the first-year sensation book a pair of goals, while last weekend’s upset of Colorado saw her log her first collegiate assists.

The Spartans are off to a 5-1-2 start through the conclusion of the non-conference portion of the schedule, with the team’s only loss coming on the road against then-No. 11 Arkansas by a 1-0 margin on Razorback Field. MSU’s victory over 19th-ranked Colorado marked the first ranked victory of the Jeff Hosler Era and proved to be the first ranked victory by a Spartan…
