West Ham ‘are set to reignite their interest in Sheffield United’s John Egan by launching a £12m bid for the centre back in January’… after David Moyes missed out on signing the 29-year-old in the summer transfer window

  • West Ham were interested in signing centre back John Egan in the summer
  • Sheffield United refused to sell the 29-year-old to the Premier League club
  • West Ham remain keen on signing Egan, and are set to bid for him in January
  • They are prepared to pay £12m for Egan, whose contract runs until 2024

West Ham are reportedly lining up a £12million bid for Sheffield United defender John Egan in the January transfer window.

Irons boss David Moyes wanted to sign Egan this summer, but the Blades opted to keep hold of him as they look to get back into the Premier League.

West Ham have not given up hope of getting their man, though, and are set to test the Championship club’s resolve by putting in a substantial offer when the transfer window reopens, according to The Sun

The 29-year-old is into his fifth season at Bramall Lane, and his contract with the Blades runs until 2024.

West Ham signed two senior central defenders over the summer, bringing in Nayef Aguerd from Rennes and Thilo Kehrer from PSG.

However, Aguerd picked up an injury in pre-season and is yet to play a competitive match for Moyes’s men, while Kehrer arrived late in the window, which forced the Hammers to field Ben Johnson as a makeshift centre back in the early stages of the season.

As a result, West Ham tried to dip into the market for another defender in the final week of the window, and they were linked with Egan, Jan Bednarek and Duje Caleta-Car among others.

Bednarek moved to Aston Villa instead, and Caleta-Car switched Marseille for Southampton, whereas Egan stayed put in the second tier.
