Newcastle set to complete shock move for Liverpool flop Loris Karius on short-term deal until January after Karl Darlow picked up ankle injury in training… with German likely to be on bench for West Ham trip on Sunday

  • Loris Karius is currently a free agent after Liverpool chose not to renew his deal
  • The 29-year-old German goalkeeper is set to undergo a medical at Newcastle
  • Karl Darlow has suffered an ankle injury but is not expected to be out long term

Newcastle are set to complete the short-term signing of former Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius after an injury to Karl Darlow.

The Magpies have been forced to act having allowed Martin Dubravka to join Manchester United on loan last week.

But an ankle injury suffered by Darlow – understudy to Nick Pope – has led to an emergency move for Karius, who has been a free agent since leaving Liverpool in the summer.

Sportsmail understands Darlow’s problem – he has damaged his ankle ligaments – will keep him sidelined until a time approaching the break for November’s World Cup, and head coach Eddie Howe feels that cover for Pope is needed. Former Carlisle stopper Mark Gillespie is currently third choice.

Karius, 29, did not feature again for Liverpool following his nightmare showing in the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid. Suffering from concussion, two of his mistakes led to a 3-1 defeat.

He is due on Tyneside on Thursday to undergo a medical – a deal until January is expected – and the German will likely be on the bench for Sunday’s trip to West Ham.

Newcastle’s other established top-flight goalkeeper Dubravka cannot be recalled from Man United until the January transfer window, under the terms of his contract at Old Trafford.
