5 quality free agents that Arsenal should sign this summer: Belotti...

Arsenal have had a busy summer so far, having invested almost £90million in bolstering Mikel Arteta’s squad.

The club are making ambitious moves as they aim to build on last season’s fifth-place finish, having signed Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City, Portuguese playmaker Fabio Vieira from Porto, USA international goalkeeper Matt Turner from New England Revolution and Brazilian starlet Marquinhos from Sao Paolo.

But there are still areas in which Arsenal’s squad can be improved, both in terms of the first-choice starting line-up and extra competition for places. Having splashed the cash on the likes of Jesus and Vieira, the Gunners may have to be a bit more thrifty if they’re to make further additions this window.

With that in mind, here are five quality free agents they might consider signing.

Florian Grillitsch

Arsenal continue to eye Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans as the answer to their midfield conundrum, but there are other, cheaper, options out there.

Austria international Grillitsch, 26, is one such option, having left Hoffenheim after five years of service and over a hundred Bundesliga appearances.

A thoroughly modern defensive midfielder, Grillitsch is effective at shielding the backline, receiving the ball and advancing it up the pitch with impressive technical passing ability.

Xeka

A name that’s flown somewhat under the radar this summer, Portuguese midfielder Miguel Angelo da Silva Rocha – or Xeka, for short – could be a handy squad player.

The 27-year-old has just been released by Lille after five years of service for the club. But he made 33 appearances during their shock Ligue 1 title win in 2020-21 and even scored the match-winner as they rubbed salt into PSG’s wounds by beating them 1-0 in the French Super Cup later that summer.

We’d also like to see commentators try and wrestle with a double pivot of Xeka and Xhaka.

Andrea Belotti

Arsenal acted fast to replace the departing Alexandre Lacazette with Gabriel Jesus, while faith has been shown to Eddie Nketiah in the form of a new five-year contract.
