Raphinha is said to be ‘exultant and euphoric’ after Barcelona and Leeds United agreed a fee for his transfer this summer.
Barcelona appear to believe they will be paying 55 million Euros (£46.5m) with Sport boasting that they will pay less than the fee agreed with Chelsea for the Brazilian.
Meanwhile, Leeds have clearly let it be known that Barcelona will pay their full asking price of £55m, with another £8m due in add-ons, according to a story in the Daily Mail.
Both clubs clearly want to make it clear that they have not buckled over the price, though Barcelona had apparently only allocated £34m for his signing so have had to spend more than originally planned.
‘The price increase is a direct consequence of the movements made by all the greats of the Premier (with the exception of Pep Guardiola’s City) to take over the services of an explosive left-handed winger,’ say Sport, who claim that Raphinha and his agent are now feeling ‘relief’ after weeks of ‘tension’, ‘anguish’ and ‘suffering’.
Raphinha scored 17 goals and logged 12 assists in 67 games for Leeds since signing from Stade Rennais for just £17m two years ago, so Leeds have made a tidy profit whoever you believe.
Arsenal showed strong interest in the Brazilian before Chelsea bid his asking price, but Raphinha’s heart was always set on Barcelona.
Leeds have already signed his replacement in Colombian attacker Luis Sinisterra, who has arrived from Feyenoord for £21m.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are close to completing the transfer of Raheem Sterling, with Nathan Ake set to join him from Manchester City.
Where have Barcelona got their money from? They have pre-sold television rights which have released money now, though it does feel like they are merely kicking the problem down the road.
They can surely now agree to pay Frenkie de Jong the money they owe him to grease the wheels of his move to Manchester United.
