Match Lookahead: Battle for 1st vs Cavalry

FC Petite Nation Joins Powered by Atlético Ottawa Community Partner Program

July 8, 2022 – Canadian Premier League (CPL)Atletico Ottawa News Release

Atlético Ottawa are back in the capital city in a top-of-the-table clash against Cavalry FC (Calgary) on Saturday evening, under the lights at TD Place (KO 7 PM ET, live on OneSoccer). Carlos González’s men got the best of this weekend’s opponents when they met in Ottawa for their Canadian Premier League opening fixture (a game in which the proceeds were donated to humanitarian assistance in Ukraine) and, should they repeat their exploits, will become outright league leaders.

Coming off the back of two away win in a row – including a first win in Halifax and a first-ever win against Forge FC (Hamilton) – the team couldn’t be on a better run to be celebrating our “Beach Party” and embrace the summer in a match where one lucky fan will walk away with a $1,000 travel voucher courtesy of Smart Living Properties.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Saturday’s kick-off.

Atlético Ottawa’s Head Coach Carlos González has been named ‘Manager of the Month’ for June – the first coach in franchise history to be awarded this accolade.

Cavalry FC are a side that Atlético Ottawa seem to particularly enjoy facing, having not lost since June 2021, including a win in their only meeting so far this season.

A tense first game in charge for Head Coach González ended in perfect fashion as forward Brian Wright stepped up in the 81st minute to score from the spot.

A certain defensive solidity has been restored in recent games, with captain Drew Beckie and Spaniard Miguel Acosta amongst the stand-out performers as Atleti haven’t conceded since their trip to Edmonton.

In fact, Beckie was awarded the ‘Performance of the Match’ during the win against Forge FC and Acosta now leads the league in tackles (25) and was named ‘Player of the Week’ by CanPL.ca.

Cavalry FC are on a fine vein of form, winning five of their last six games.

Young striker Aribim Pepple was awarded ‘Player of the Month’ in June following his personal exploits and the 19-year-old is one to watch out for when it comes to the Albertan goal threat.

Record head-to-head (all time): 4W-0D-1L; 9 goals scored, 5 goals conceded

Returning to TD Place, Atleti are expected to once again be playing in front of an electric crowd.
