Gordon ‘would be ready’ to sign for Newcastle despite report claiming Everton won’t sell

Newcastle target Anthony Gordon celebrates scoring

Anthony Gordon would be keen on signing for Newcastle United this summer if Everton accepted a bid, according to reports.

The attacking midfielder came through the youth ranks at Goodison Park and made his senior debut in a 3-0 Europa League away win over Apollon Limassol in December 2017.

It was a while before Gordon properly broke into the first team with the 21-year-old making just 14 Premier League appearances in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons combined.

His loan spell at Preston North End in the second half of 2020/21 did him good as it led to him playing 40 matches in all competitions for Everton in the 2021/22 campaign.

Gordon scored four Premier League goals and created another two for his team-mates last term with other Premier League clubs now taking an interest.

Last week it was reported that Tottenham had ‘cooled’ their interest in Gordon after apparently making a ‘combined offer’ for Gordon and Richarlison’.

The Brazilian has now signed for Spurs but Gordon has so far stayed at Goodison with Newcastle United the latest club to show serious interest.

A report in The Athletic today has claimed that Everton have ‘no intention of selling’ Gordon this summer and are ‘unwilling to consider his exit’.

Everton ‘will try to secure him to a new contract, although that is believed to have been planned for some time rather than as a consequence of admiration from rivals.’

The Athletic adds that Everton boss Frank Lampard is ‘vehemently against the prospect of Gordon leaving’ with the England under-21 international a ‘big part of Lampard’s plans going forward and a new contract would reflect his status as a key part of his project’.

Despite The Athletic‘s claims that Everton will not sell this summer, Caught Offside insist that Gordon ‘would be ready to make the transfer to Newcastle if a deal can be agreed between the two clubs’.

The Magpies are looking to pay £35m for Gordon with ‘sources close to the player’ informing Caught Offside ‘that he’d be tempted by the move to St James’ Park’.

However, Newcastle are ‘yet to make a formal offer, despite some initial talks between the two teams’ but we would fit the profile of player Eddie Howe needs this summer.
