Kieran Trippier has reiterated the need for patience at Newcastle United, whom he feels may take five or six years to get to the level they want.
Trippier was the first signing Newcastle made in January after their Saudi-backed takeover late last year. The right-back brought his experience from Atletico Madrid, having previously played for the likes of Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur too.
He settled in quickly back in the Premier League, before an injury disrupted his progress. His return came at the weekend in a 5-0 loss to Manchester City, the club whose academy he developed in.
City may have given Newcastle the blueprint to follow in terms of turning newfound wealth into sustained success. They have become a dominant force in the years since their own Middle Eastern takeover.
However, the comprehensive defeat Newcastle suffered to them served as a reminder of the gap currently between the Magpies and the top sides.
With that in mind, Trippier has reminded his new club that they were never going to catch up overnight.
Trippier told Chronicle Live: “No, definitely not. I was at Man City when their takeover happened and I had to leave to get minutes.
“You see the way Man City have done it and everyone is looking at Newcastle now. Like I said when I first arrived here, it’s not going to happen overnight; it could take five years, it could take six years and everybody has to be patient.
“But they are taking the right steps and that’s all you can do. You can’t just go all guns blazing. You have to take the right steps to move the club forward and that’s what Newcastle are doing.”
Trippier is under contract with Newcastle until 2024, by which time he will be 33 years old. It is not unfeasible that he may have left by the time the glory days they are hoping for become reality.
