Guardiola reflects on ‘perfect afternoon’, labels Man City team ‘one of the best’ he’s trained

Man City boss Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has claimed that this current Man City team is “one of the best” he has trained.

These comments came after City smashed five goals past Newcastle United at the Etihad.

This league encounter followed their gut-wrenching Champions League exit on Wednesday night.

Manchester City enjoy stroll in the park after Liverpool finally release the pressure

Man City responded to their defeat to Real Madrid in style as they eased past Newcastle.

Raheem Sterling and Aymeric Laporte got the ball rolling in the first half. Rodri and Phil Foden got goals of their own before Sterling grabbed his second in stoppage time.

With Liverpool drawing against Tottenham on Saturday, City are now three points clear at the top of the Premier League with three games to go.

Speaking post-match (quotes via BBC Sport), Guardiola insisted that naysayers are foolish to write off his team:

“Perfect afternoon. With what this team have done, do you have any doubt?

“We are five years doing this every three days. If some people doubted us they don’t know this team.

“It’s one of the best groups I ever trained in my life.”

On goal difference: “We talked about that at half-time – the importance of the win. It could have been 3-1 [with a big Newcastle chance] and after we scored two goals at the end. There’s a big difference.”

On Ruben Dias going off: “We have 13.5 players because Nathan [Ake] is not in perfect condition. I’m not worried because if Phil Foden has to play as centre-back, he will play there. [When asked really?] No.

“Three points, nine points to play for, four ahead on goal difference. Another final on Wednesday.”

5+ – @ManCity have scored five or more goals in a Premier League game for the 30th time since Pep Guardiola took over in 2016-17, which is more than the second and third most instances by teams combined:

30 – Manchester City
14 – Liverpool
13 – Spurs
