Howe confirms double boost to give ‘everyone a lift’; calms Newcastle, Saint-Maximin storm

Eddie Howe has revealed Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier could be available again for Newcastle United when they take on Manchester City.

After losing to Liverpool last week, Newcastle United will once again be up against a title challenger on Sunday when they visit Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. Currently in mid-table, it will be another test of their ambitions.

Howe has done a good job to guide them away from the relegation zone. Their form in recent months has been even more impressive considering Wilson hasn’t played since December and Trippier has been sidelined since February.

However, both have been back in training recently. Therefore, Howe is hoping he can have them back on the pitch in what remains of this season.

He told a press conference of Wilson: “He’s trained all week. He’s trained very well. He had two really tough days and he’s come through them well.

“He’s put a lot of work in to get to this point. He looks in a good place and there’s a good chance he’ll be involved on Sunday.”

The manager then added: “Kieran is slightly behind Callum in that he hasn’t trained every day but when he has trained, he’s done very well. We’ll make a late decision on him.”

The return of two of the most experienced players in the Newcastle United squad has been a welcome boost for their teammates.

Howe explained: “They’re both competitors. They’re both winners. They’re ready now. They’ve trained very well.

“It does give everyone a lift. When you see good players on the training pitch as part of your team, it can’t fail to inspire you.”

In contrast, Howe cannot yet commit to when defender Fabian Schar will be back, despite ruling out a fracture.

He said: “We haven’t seen him this week. We hope he’ll be back to be available but he’s not trained yet.
