May 5, 2022 – United Soccer League Championship (USL) – Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC News Release

Colorado Springs, CO – The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC earned another three points at home after an event filled match against Rio Grande Valley FC ended 3-2.

The Switchbacks started off strong with Zach Zandi getting a chance in the 8th minute off a pass from Michee Ngalina that ultimately was taken down by RGV goalkeeper Tyler Deric. The teams would spend the next forty minutes with neither side able to capitalize, until the 43′ when Elvis Amoh received a cross pass from Hadji Barry and tucked the ball into bottom left corner of the net from just inside the penalty box.

The Switchbacks used their one goal momentum and only seven minutes into the second half Zandi picked up goal number two as Cam Lindley’s corner kick was passed over and Zandi’s angled cross weaved through the defenders to land in the bottom right corner of the net. The Switchbacks would then earn a third goal, off an own goal from Luka Malesevic, as Malik Johnson took the ball into the box and Malesevic slid the ball into his own net after being pressured from Matt Mahoney.

Rio Grande Valley FC would get themselves on the board in the 76′, when after a failed PK attempt, Frank Nodarse netted a header goal off a corner kick. Less than four minutes later deja vu would hit as RGV scored a second goal off a corner kick header by Wahab Ackwei.

The 80′ saw the Switchbacks reduced to ten men after Triston Hodge received a red card. Switchbacks goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell had a game saving save off yet another corner kick by RGV that kept the opposing team from notching the tying goal. The Toros wouldn’t find another chance, and the match would end in a 3-2 result, marking the Switchbacks 8th win in nine games.

The Switchbacks are on the road for the rest of the month, and will play San Diego Loyal next Saturday in California. They will return to Weidner Field on June 3rd as they take on Las Vegas…
