Sergi Canos emerges as shock transfer target for Spanish giants

Brentford could face a fight to keep hold of midfielder Sergi Canos this summer with reports claiming Barcelona are targeting a surprise swoop.

Canos has impressed for the Bees in the Premier League this season and his form has not gone unnoticed. Indeed reports are now rife suggesting that Barca want to take him back to Spain. Canos was in Barca’s youth system until the age of 16 before he joined Liverpool.

The 25-year-old eventually ended up at Brentford where he has gone on to realise his potential. He has gone on to make almost 200 appearances for the Bees.

Canos was a revelation in the Championship last season as Brentford won promotion. He made 55 appearances, contributing to 19 goals, and has had no issue making the step up to the Premier League.

The Spaniard has made 30 appearances this season scoring two goals. He has also chipped in with two assists as Brentford sit 14th on the table.

Such form has now kicked off suggestions that Barcelona want him back. The Catalan giants face a huge summer as they look to revamp their squad. They are way behind leaders Real Madrid in La Liga and have to try and close the gap.

Xavi brought in some big signings after being named as coach in November 2021. Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang arrived from Arsenal in January, while Ferran Torres also signed. It helped them to climb the table but more investment is needed.

However reports claim they do not have a great deal of cash to spend. Barcelona are still working under some restrictions and Xavi will have to be shrewd with his signings. Hence the link to Canos.

Spanish publication Sport say a deal could happen. They report that Canos would fit within the restrictions they have to work under.
