Allegri Delights as Juve Close on Third After 'Disastrous Start'

Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri has admitted his side had a “disastrous start” to the Serie A season after moving within one point of third spot on Monday.

The Bianconeri got past Sassuolo 2-1 on Monday after goals from Paulo Dybala and Moise Kean, with the win moving them to 66 points from 34 games.

Juve are now one point behind third-placed Napoli, who have managed only one point from their past three games, to slip off the title behind top two AC Milan and Inter Milan.

Allegri’s side have been playing catch-up all season after managing only two points from their first four league games.

“It was an important victory, playing at times a poor match, but given the conditions it was like that; we made a good step towards fourth place and we also have Napoli now just one point ahead,” Allegri told reporters.

“If we are at this point, thanks to the growth of the team after a disastrous start, it means that we must have no regrets.

“Sometimes football goes the opposite of what is shown on the pitch, because we didn’t win many games when playing well, and absences shouldn’t be an alibi.”

Dusan Vlahovic was used as a 55th minute substitute following their Coppa Italia win over Fiorentina.

“Vlahovic? He demands a lot from himself but he has to remain calm, sometimes he makes mistakes as he is too rushed,” Allegri said.

He added: “The team has improved a great deal over the season. I was very angry tonight, as in the final minutes we shouldve controlled the ball better and taken the result home, but there were young lads who dont have the experience and dont understand it yet. We need them to learn quickly.

“We played many months without important players who do a lot of running, like Chiesa, McKennie, Arthur, while Danilo was out for three months too.

“We need to keep working, bringing in two or three players that we need, but we dont need to scrap everything and start again.”
