Lampard defends tactics against Liverpool, insisting Everton were ‘smart for 60 minutes’ in defeat

Frank Lampard has defended his defensive tactics after Everton fell to a 2-0 defeat against Merseyside rivals Liverpool.

The result leaves the Toffees in the relegation zone, two points behind Burnley with a game in hand.

Lampard’s side frustrated their opponents, with the former Chelsea boss insisting that his side “played well” and adopted a defensive approach as Everton had to remain “disciplined” in order to compete with “one of the best teams in the world”.

“I thought we played well,” Lampard told Sky Sports. “The game plan was understanding they are one of the best teams in the world, with what they are doing to other teams.

“We wanted to be disciplined and to create chances. We had a couple of opportunities; the first half was good and we started the second half well. If we get the first goal, the game feels different.

“We are not in a position to go toe-to-toe with Liverpool. We were smart for 60 minutes and then it becomes very difficult after that.

“[Our league position] will be talked about, but we had to assume Burnley would win today. Leeds are still in it, they play tomorrow [against Crystal Palace].”

Speaking to the BBC, Lampard added: “The result is [disappointing] but the performance isn’t. I’m very pleased and proud of the work ethic. We didn’t get the clinical finishes at 0-0. If we take one of those chances, counter-attacking behind their line… I can’t ask for any more of the players.

“We really needed to take advantage of the big period of the game where we were spot on.”

He continued: “They [Liverpool] are in a different area to us. They’re near the top of the table, they’ve been together a long time and have a strong style of play. We had to be organised and discplined. I couldn’t ask for more at half-time except taking…
