Wayne Rooney was reportedly offered the chance to return to Manchester United as a member of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff but turned it down due to one key reason.

The legendary former striker, who hit over 250 goals as a player for the Red Devils, is impressing while in charge of Derby County. Despite their 21-point deduction, Rooney has helped the Rams pick up 13 wins from 43 matches so far this season.

They include victories over the likes of Fulham, Sheffield United and West Brom.

Derby have had a good campaign on the pitch while their financial problems catch up with them. Ultimately though, they will be playing in League One next term after their relegation was confirmed earlier this week.

Rooney is picking up admirers due to the great job he has done at Pride Park. The 36-year-old became a target for Everton after the sacking of Rafa Benitez.

And The Athletic claim Manchester United made contact with him in recent weeks as part of their managerial overhaul.

The club will be coached by Ten Hag next season after they paid £1.7million to release him from his Ajax contract.

United told Rooney he had the opportunity to link up with Ten Hag at Old Trafford by joining the Dutchman’s coaching staff.

Such a move would have seen him work alongside Ten Hag and his assistant, Mitchell van der Gaag. The Ajax coach is highly likely to follow Ten Hag to Manchester this summer.

However, Rooney made it clear he would not secure a dream return to United. The main reason for this is he will only leave Derby for a managerial position.

England’s record goalscorer is also intent on taking the Rams back into the Championship by securing promotion from the third tier.

It looks like Ten Hag will have to do without Rooney as he gets used to life at the Theatre of Dreams.
