Steven Bergwijn has responded to questions over a potential summer exit from Tottenham, which could have implications for Manchester United.

The winger, who mainly operates on the left flank, almost left Tottenham in January. Dutch club Ajax were hoping to entice him back to the Eredivisie with the offer of regular game time.

However, they were unable to agree a deal with Antonio Conte’s side. As such, 24-year-old Bergwijn will spend the rest of the campaign in north London.

The failed transfer may see Ajax boss Erik ten Hag end up at Old Trafford.

Dutch journalist Henk Spaan wrote on Tuesday: “Was it [Marc] Overmars who gave up the fight with his financial director, or was it Susan Lenderink herself who stopped the negotiations with [Daniel] Levy of Spurs?

“It was a mistake for sure. It is not very unlikely that Ajax would have won with Bergwijn [against] Benfica.

“The fact that Ajax could not/would not bring him in will not encourage ten Hag to stay.”

Ajax are likely to come back in for Bergwijn this summer as he is not exactly in Conte’s plans. The manager can utilise Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura and Dejan Kulusevski instead of the Netherlands international.
