No. 9 Northwestern downs Minnesota 2-1


ST. PAUL, Minn. — Northwestern secured a 2-1 win over Minnesota on the road at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium Sunday afternoon. 

Northwestern improved to 9-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in Big Ten action following the win. The 9-1-1 start is the best since 2016, and the 3-0-0 conference record is the best start to a conference campaign since 1998.

How it Happened

Northwestern broke the 0-0 tie when Maple Grove, Minnesota native Lily Gilbertson recorded her first goal of the season in the 23rd minute, assisted by Ella Hase.


The Golden Gophers evened the game on a goal from Sadie Harper in the 68th minute, assisted by McKenna Buisman.

The Wildcats responded quickly, grabbing a 2-1 lead on Rowan Lapi’s 70th-minute header, her third goal of the season. Josie Aulicino assisted the goal, delivering pinpoint service on the corner kick. 

The ‘Cats ran out the final twenty minutes to finish off a 2-0-0 road trip.

  • The win was the seventh in a row for the Wildcats, the third-longest winning streak in program history
  • The ‘Cats are unbeaten in their last nine games, the second-longest unbeaten streak in program history
  • The game-winning goal was Lapi’s third of the season, tying her for most in the Big Ten
