Bears Outlast Roadrunners For Third Straight Win

Nevada

BERKELEY- Senior Karlie Lema earned her second brace of the season and junior Alex Klos scored her third straight game winner to lead the California women’s soccer team to a 4-3 win over Cal State Bakersfield Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.

The Golden Bears’ third straight raised their record to 4-1-1 while the Roadrunners dropped to 1-4-0.

Cal lived in the attacking third all afternoon with 17 total shots on the day, 12 of which landed on goal, while the Roadrunners’ success came from their offensive efficiency. Of CSUB’s nine total shots, six landed on frame and three found the back of the net.

The ‘Runners got on the board in the 21st minute with a goal from Isis Salazar-Ortega and held their 1-0 lead until the 41st when Skylar Briggs found open grass up the right sideline. The senior midfielder dribbled all the way into the 18-yard box and played a ball in that ricocheted off a Roadrunner defender and straight to Lema who backheeled in her fifth goal of the season.

Lema struck again just as the second period kicked-off scoring the go-ahead goal in the 47th minute. She now leads the ACC with six goals and ranks second with 13 points. Just two minutes later, graduate student Julia Leontini shot a promising free kick from 30 yards out that was saved and sent off the crossbar by CSUB goalkeeper Kamy Anaya. Fifth-year Mya Daily tracked down the rebound and floated her first goal of the season to increase Cal’s lead to 3-1.
