FAIRFAX,VA – Maryland women’s soccer (2-2-2) was defeated by George Mason (2-2-2), 3-2, on Sept. 1 at George Mason Stadium.
Two freshmen connected for the game’s opening goal, scored by the Terps. Taryn Raibon scored off an entry pass from Emily Lenhard in the 13th minute. Raibon’s goal was the first of her career and the assist was the first of Lenhard’s career.

However, the Patriots responded by scoring the game’s following three goals in the 37th, 48th and 82nd minutes. The first two scores occurred on scrambles for the ball near the net on second-chance opportunities. The go-ahead goal came from a long-ball kick into the box that went between Terrapin defenders and to the Patriot attacker for a low-angle shot.
Despite the three unlucky goals, Maryland’s defense allowed it to dominate time of possession. George Mason didn’t manufacture its first shot on goal until the 37th minute, and Maryland held considerable advantages in shots (20-5), shots on goal (9-3) and corner kicks (9-1).
