Man Utd set Christian Eriksen price tag amid Ajax interest

Champions League - Ajax Amsterdam v Manchester City

Manchester United are looking to sell Christian Eriksen for £5m before the August transfer deadline, according to a report.

Eriksen is among several out-of-favour players that the Red Devils are trying to shift ahead of the window’s closure.

The veteran midfielder has been linked with a return to Ajax, and The Athletic report that United are willing to sanction a sale if they receive £5m. Scott McTominay, Victor Lindelof and Hannibal Mejbri could also leave in the coming days.

United picked up Eriksen on a free transfer from Brentford in the summer of 2022, so stand to make a profit as long as they receive some sort of fee for him. He has only one year left to run on his contract.

Eriksen was one of Erik ten Hag’s first signings at Old Trafford and was a key player during the 2022/23 season, though his game time has since dwindled and the Denmark international has tumbled down the pecking order.

Ajax first signed Eriksen when he was only 16 from Danish side Odense Boldklub back in 2008. Then regarded as one of European football’s best young prospects, he went on to make 162 appearances for the Dutch giants, winning five trophies.

Eriksen left Ajax in 2013 to join Tottenham Hotspur, signing as one of seven players to replace Real Madrid-bound Gareth Bale. He won the club’s player of the year award twice, including in his first season, and was part of the Spurs side that reached their first-ever UEFA Champions League final, notably at the expense of Ajax.

After scoring 69 goals in 305 games for Tottenham, Eriksen moved to Inter in January 2020 and helped them end Juventus’ decade-long grip on Serie A, winning the 2020/21 title. After suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 and being fitted with an ICD, his contract at San Siro was terminated due to Italian restrictions on playing with pacemakers.

He returned to football in 2022 with Brentford, signing a short-term deal and instantly becoming one of their best players in only 11 appearances. Upon the expiry of this contract, he decided to join United.
