Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez believes new signings Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui will be ‘special for our system’.

De Ligt and Mazraoui completed their double transfer from Bayern Munich on Tuesday evening, becoming the Red Devils’ third and fourth signings of a promising summer window.

The two defenders pointed to the influence of Erik ten Hag upon their arrivals, having previously worked with him at Ajax, where Mazraoui also played alongside Martinez.

Speaking to BBC Sport’s Football Focus, Martinez revealed his excitement at United’s latest incomings.

“I’m so excited about Matthijs and Noussair,” Martinez said.

“We are here to help them and they are really good players, that’s why Manchester United bought them and they will show [that] quickly because they have really good qualities and they like to play football and they are special for our system.

“I think Matthijs will give us a strong personality, playing from the back, defending high, I can’t wait to play with him.”

Three of United’s four incomings this summer have been defenders, with 18-year-old Leny Yoro also heading to Old Trafford. The centre-back was heavily courted by Real Madrid, but they were unable to meet Lille’s demands and that allowed United to swoop in and finalise an agreement instead.

Yoro will, however, miss the first few months of the season after breaking a metatarsal during a pre-season friendly against Arsenal.

De Ligt and Mazraoui arrive fit for the new campaign and could even make their debuts this week. United open the Premier League season on Friday night at home to Fulham and the pair could be drafted into the starting lineup.
