Best USWNT goalies of all time

The three best USWNT goalies have all won at least one World Cup for the United States, cementing their legacies as the greatest keepers of all time.

The U.S. Women’s National Team has had the best female soccer players at virtually every position at some point in the last three decades. Despite new starters, coaches, and competition, the USWNT still managed to add four World Cups and four Olympic gold medals to their trophy cabinet.

So much of the USWNT’s success comes down to their historic goalkeepers. In fact, the three best keepers for the USWNT all played vital roles in the Stars and Stripes’ victories over the past three generations.

3. Alyssa Naeher

Alyssa Naeher’s USWNT career is still unfolding, but the keeper is already one of the best to ever start between the posts for the Stars and Stripes. Naeher was Hope Solo’s backup at the 2015 World Cup, but by 2019, she was the starter for the USA and would go on to keep a clean sheet in the final, helping her side claim their fourth World Cup.

The 36-year-old also added a Gold Cup to her trophy cabinet this year, as well as her seventh SheBelieves Cup. The only thing missing from her resume is an Olympic gold medal, which she will try to earn this summer at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

2. Hope Solo

Hope Solo holds the record for the most wins of any USWNT keeper in history with 153, and during her legendary years with the Stars and Stripes, she won plenty of silverware to etch her name in the history books. Solo is a two-time gold medalist and a World Cup champion.

The keeper also has plenty of individual accolades for her time with the national team, including two Golden Glove awards for her performances at the 2012 and 2015 World Cups. She even took home the Bronze Ball at the 2012 World Cup despite the USA’s second-place finish.

Solo still holds the record for the most clean sheets for the USWNT with 102.

1. Briana Scurry

Briana Scurry is also a two-time gold medalist and a World Cup champion, but her performance in the latter solidified her legacy as the best USWNT keeper of all time. Scurry kept a clean sheet in the 1999 World Cup semi-finals against Brazil, and another in the final against China, except the USA also could not score in that match.
