Truth behind ‘release clause’ claims revealed

Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister does not have a release clause in his contract, a report has revealed.

Rumours emerged from Argentina last month suggesting Mac Allister’s Liverpool contract included a ‘secret” £60m release clause which Real Madrid were said to be ready to trigger.

However, The Athletic have revealed that no such clause exists, and Mac Allister will still sport a Liverpool shirt in the 2024/25 campaign.

The report goes on to stress that Liverpool “do not allow release clauses in contracts” and references negotiations with Emre Can, who the Reds allowed to leave on a free transfer in 2018 rather than meet his demand of a release clause in a new contract.

Mac Allister is set to embark on his first season under new boss Arne Slot, as he settles into life at Liverpool. The former Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder made the switch to Anfield last summer and instantly became a vital player in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

The Argentine international made 46 appearances across all competitions for Liverpool during the latest campaign, registering seven goals and as many assists in that time.

His impact attracted the attention of top European sides, and Liverpool have fallen victim to losing South American stars to Spanish giants in the past. The likes of Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho made the switch to Barcelona, but Mac Allister has voiced his desire to remain at the club.

Speaking previously about the links, Mac Allister shut down any speculation. He said: “I don’t talk about assumptions. I’m very happy at Liverpool.”
