Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma is receiving support from the club following an alleged violent mugging while on holiday in the south of France.
Not part of Mali’s squad for this month’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Bissouma used the time to jet off to Cannes with his wife to rest and unwind following the end of the 2023/24 season.
But the trip ended up being cut short after reports in France detailed Bissouma being the victim of an attack with tear gas by two men. His agent, Bastien Caire, subsequently confirmed that the 27-year-old had his watch, thought to be worth around £250,000, stolen as the assailants fled the scene.
The incident is reported to have taken place around 4am on Sunday morning outside a luxury hotel on the famous Promenade de la Croisette in Cannes. But attempts to escape into the building were scuppered when, as Bissouma informed local police, the doors were found to be locked.
French police are investigating, although Bissouma and his wife are believed to have returned to London a matter of hours later.
“We are aware of the incident that took place and we will continue to check on the welfare of Yves and his family,” Tottenham have said in a short statement.
Bissouma made 28 appearance for Spurs in Ange Postecoglou’s first season in charge, the majority of them as a starter. He wound up missing five games through various yellow and red card suspensions, while participation at the Africa Cup of Nations in January and February saw the player absent for three Premier League games and two others in the FA Cup.
The former Brighton & Hove Albion star hasn’t represented his country since AFCON. His relationship with Mali’s football federation appears to have deteriorated in recent months amid claims he was left furious by the decision to overlook him for international fixtures in March. Bissouma had been suffering with malaria during the AFCON tournament but continued to play with the illness.
