Man United’s SIX defensive transfer targets for the summer as Red Devils look to sure up leaky defence after worst campaign at the back in 53 years

Manchester United are in need of new defenders after their worst defensive season since 1971

Manchester United‘s defensive problems have been glaringly obvious this season and a major cause for concern in a largely miserable campaign.

While Saturday’s FA Cup final triumph boosted the mood, United recorded their worst-ever Premier League finish as they ended the campaign in eighth.

At the back, they have been plagued by injuries, while mistakes and a lack of confidence have also led to them breaking an unwanted club record.

United conceded 83 goals this season – the most the club has shipped in a single campaign since 1971.

With Erik ten Hag reportedly on his way out despite the win over Manchester City, a new dawn is on the horizon at United and it could start with much-needed reinforcements in defence.

Seemingly Sir Jim Ratcliffe agrees, and is ready to fund the signings of two centre-backs when the transfer window rolls around. Raphael Varane is departing and other defenders could follow.

United’s budget for the coming window has been set at just over £35m in cash. However, it is expected that Ineos could raise funds by player sales and swaps.

Mail Sport takes a look at United’s potential defensive targets as they look to sturdy up at the heart of the defence.

Jarrad Branthwaite

Jarrad Branthwaite is a wanted man, and it is easy to see why. The Everton centre-back has had a breakthrough campaign on the left side of the Toffees’ defence and has attracted interest from several clubs. One of those being United.

The 21-year-old is a towering defender who is strong in the air, surprisingly pacy, and calm in possession.

All of these attributes led to some dominant performances, which caught the eye of England manager, Gareth Southgate, as he has been included in England’s provisional 33-man squad for Euro 2024.

However, despite United’s desire to bring Branthwaite to Old Trafford, a deal could prove tricky. The Red Devils are reportedly willing to offer a fee in the region of £55million for the defender, but Everton could dig their heels in as they attempt to keep the wanted man.
