Gotham FC Wrap up Road Trip with Clash vs. San Diego Wave

SAN DIEGO – NJ/NY Gotham FC travels to the west coast to wrap up a three-game week and back-to-back games on the road. In a rematch of the UKG Challenge Cup, Gotham FC will face the San Diego Wave FC at Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday (7:30 p.m. ET, ION).


Gotham FC enters Sunday’s match on a two-game winning streak, and has held its opponents scoreless in each game. Most recently, Gotham FC defeated the Houston Dash 1-0 on Wednesday night, where forward Lynn Williams scored and extended her league record with her 21st game-winning goal. Williams’ goal also tied Australian international forward and former NWSL star Sam Kerr’s league record for goals in all competitions with 78.

The Wave are coming off a 2-0 win against the Utah Royals on Wednesday night. San Diego forward Jaedyn Shaw buried a penalty and forward Makenzy Doniak found the back of the net to secure the win at Snapdragon Stadium.

Gotham FC and San Diego will play each other for the first time this regular season on Sunday. The two teams last faced each other in the UKG Challenge Cup on March 15, just before the start of the regular season. The Wave won 1-0 off of a late goal from forward Alex Morgan in the 88th minute. Additionally, Sunday will be the first time Gotham FC returns to Snapdragon Stadium since winning the 2023 NWSL Championship on Nov. 11, 2023.

Key Notes

Forward Lynn Williams tied Sam Kerr’s record for goals in all competitions with 78 on May 8 against the Houston Dash. Williams also has 66 regular season goals, which is second to Sam Kerr’s 77.

On Wednesday night, Williams extended her league record with her 21st game-winning goal with her goal in the 8th minute.

Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger has recorded two shutouts in three starts since joining Gotham FC on April 19.

Against the Dash, defender Jenna Nighswonger led the team with four chances created and 19 passes in the final third, while also recording the second best passing accuracy with 86.1%.

Gotham FC extended its unbeaten streak to three games on Wednesday night, the longest since its playoff run to the NWSL championship last year.

Gotham FC has three shutouts, which is tied for the league lead.

Sunday will be the first time Gotham FC returns to Snapdragon Stadium since winning the 2023 NWSL Championship on Nov. 11, 2023.
