Forward Madison Falls in Battle for Madison Match

Forward Madison FC Unveils 2023 Preseason Schedule

April 20, 2024 – United Soccer League One (USL1)
Forward Madison FC News Release

The annual Battle For Madison kicked off on a chilly night at Breese Stevens Field. The Flamingos started with a majority of the possession, but UW-Madison was able to hold tight defensively. There weren’t major opportunities on goal for either team until the 30th. UW-Madison ripped a shot, but FMFC goalkeeper, Bernd Schipmann was able to make the save to keep the game at zeros.

Shortly after, in the 37th minute, Forward Madison had an opportunity off of a free kick, when midfielder Jimmie Villalobos volleyed a shot over the crossbar. The first half finished in a draw, 0-0.

In the second half, FMFC made a few offensive subs to spark an attacking pressure. Both sides attempted to push down the field, but weren’t able to connect passes in the final third until late in the half. In the 65th minute, Forward subbed on newcomer Cherif Dieye, and three minutes later, he sprinted down the field and took a shot on goal. The Badgers keeper dove to save the ball, but forward Agustin Davila tapped in the deflection to put the home team up one.

However, the Badgers wouldn’t back down. In the 75th minute, UW-Madison buried one past goalkeeper Martin Sanchez to tie the match, 1-1. The Badgers continued to have a few dangerous looks on goal late in the game, but the match ended in a tie after 90 minutes.

To determine a winner, the match went into penalty kicks. After seven rounds of back-and-forth shots, UW-Madison pulled the 6-5 victory to take home their first Battle For Madison win.
