Jamie Carragher changes stance on Liverpool's Europa League campaign

Liverpool travel to Bergamo on Thursday to play Atalanta in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie and Jamie Carragher has admitted that he has changed his stance on the Reds campaign in Europe.

The Premier League club were hammered last week by the Serie A club and are on the brink of elimination from the Europa League. Jurgen Klopp’s men have to turn around a 3-0 deficit and that will be very tough away from Anfield.

Following the defeat last Thursday, former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher stated that his former club should focus on the Premier League but the Sky Sports pundit has admitted that his stance has changed.

The reason for this has been the Reds’ 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday which has put Man City in full control of their Premier League destiny. Carragher has now called for Klopp to play his best team on Thursday and to try to win both trophies between now and the end of the season.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Atalanta on Thursday, Carragher has told Sky Sports: “I went to the Atalanta game and it felt like one of those freak results; Liverpool had chances and the manager probably didn’t pick the right team.

“I thought Liverpool would beat Crystal Palace and be in a good position in the Premier League and focus more on the Premier League than the Europa League but I think the fact that Liverpool lost to Crystal Palace they got to go for everything now.

“The stakes are high and they will want to finish with something this season after putting so much work in over the last eight or nine months so my stance has changed… Jurgen, play your best team.”

Klopp will very likely go for both trophies and will be dreaming of another historic comeback in Italy this week.
