Portland Timbers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers will celebrate Earth Month this April with volunteer events and initiatives to promote environmental awareness. Additionally, the club will host their Green Is Gold Match, presented by Providence, against LAFC on Saturday, April 13 at Providence Park.

The April 13 Green Is Gold match will highlight community partners The Nature Conservancy, Oregon Zoo, Friends of Trees, and SOLVE with in-stadium PA reads and donation QR codes on the video board. The Timbers will also sport the 2024 One Planet Pre-Match Jerseys made from recycled materials to raise awareness about our natural ecosystems. The warmup kit is available for preorder through PTFC Authentics.

The club will be engaging in several volunteer opportunities as part of MLS’s Seventh Annual Greener Goals Week of Service from April 9 – 22. On April 16, the Timbers front office will be volunteering at the Kindness Farm, a nonprofit farm in Southeast Portland. Next, they will attend the second annual We Believe in Portland event, a downtown Portland cleanup initiative, on April 19. On Earth Day, April 22, the club will be supporting SOLVE’s cleanup project around Providence Park.

The Timbers kicked off Earth Month with their Score A Goal, Plant A Tree (SAGPAT) initiative on April 6, planting over 80 trees in the Beaverton area. In partnership with Daimler Truck North America, Friends of Trees plants a tree in the Portland community for every Timbers goal scored through the SAGPAT program. Since the start of SAGPAT in 2011, the Timbers have planted over 4,000 trees. These trees and shrubs absorb carbon dioxide at a rate of 1.9M pounds a year, remove 513,600 pounds of pollutants each year and intercept over 25.4M gallons of storm water runoff to keep our rivers clean. Media assets from the event can be found here.

Providence Park has introduced transportation alternatives for the matchday experience to encourage fans to decrease their carbon footprint. Fans will be able to use their matchday ticket as proof of fare to ride TriMet buses and MAX trains to and from Providence Park to encourage environmentally conscious transportation. TriMet’s MAX Blue and Red lines, as well as four bus lines, stop in convenient locations near the stadium, and fans can ride starting three hours before a match through three hours after it ends with their tickets. Users can plan their trip to Providence Park at trimet.org…
