Wilson Signs with Toronto FC II

ALBANY, N.Y. – Former University at Albany goalkeeper Shafique Wilson has signed a deal to join Toronto FC II of MLS Next Pro, the club announced Thursday.

Wilson, a native of Kleinburg, Ontario, Canada, made 31 appearances over three seasons for UAlbany, and recorded more than 2,800 minutes for the Great Danes in goal.  Wilson averaged 1.09 goals-against per game, and made saves at a rate of .750.  Wilson ranks third and sixth, respectively, in the two categories in UAlbany’s Division I era history.

In his 31 appearances, Wilson recorded 13 shutouts, the fourth-highest total among UAlbany Division I-era goalkeepers.  His shutout total includes a streak of five-straight to close the 2022 regular season and begin the 2022 postseason, including two in 10 days against #8 Vermont.

Toronto FC II, affiliated with Toronto FC of the MLS, went 6-8-14 in 2023 to finish 11th in the league’s Eastern Conference.  In the inaugural season in 2022, Toronto FC II went 12-3-9 to finish second in the East and advanced to the Eastern Conference final.

MLS Next Pro is a third-tier professional men’s soccer league in the United States, and will embark on its third season in 2024.  The League features 29 teams, 27 of which are affiliated with Major League Soccer clubs.
