Six Women’s Soccer Grads Kick-Off 2024 NWSL Season


PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Six former Rutgers women’s soccer student-athletes are set to begin the 2024 season for their professional teams in the National Women’s Soccer League. The campaign kicked off with Amirah Ali and San Diego Wave FC winning the 2024 Challenge Cup over Kristen Edmonds and defending champions NJ/NY Gotham FC on March 15 at Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.

Ali is in her third season with the Wave and has been on the roster for all three season’s of the club’s existence. Edmonds, fresh off lifting the league’s cup in 2023 with Gotham, enters her 11th season in the NWSL – making her the longest tenured professional among Rutgers graduates.

 

Gabby Provenzano enters her third season on roster with Portland Thorns FC, who will begin their season against KC Current on Sat., March 16 at 1 p.m. ET.

United States Women’s National Team goalkeeper Casey Murphy begins her seventh NWSL campaign, continuing her professional run with the North Carolina Courage. NC begins their season on Sat., March 16 at 7 p.m. against the Houston Dash.

When the Utah Royals formed this offseason as an expansion team, the club selected Scarlet Knight graduates Madison Pogarch and Frankie Tagliaferri. The Royals will play their first match on Sat. March 16 at 7:30 p.m. against the Chicago Red Stars.

Pogarch enters her seventh NWSL season alongside fellow Rutgers alum, Tagliaferri, who begins her third.
