Men's Soccer Ready to Embark on Foreign Tour to Spain

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – From March 8 to 17, the Rutgers men’s soccer team will embark on its first Foreign Tour under head coach Jim McElderry, traveling to Spain.

The Scarlet Knights will land in Madrid on the morning of March 9, where they will stay until they move onto Barcelona for the remainder of the foreign tour.

In Madrid, as well as sightseeing, the team will have multiple training sessions and play one game versus CD San Roque EFF. RU will also attend the Real Madrid vs. Celta Viga match and tour both Atletico Madrid Stadium and Santiago Bernabéu.

Rutgers will then take a quick trip to Toledo, where the squad will compete in another match against Illescas FC, in addition to watching a Champions League match up between Atletico and Inter Milan.

On the seventh day of the trip, the Scarlet Knights will travel to Barcelona where they will finish the trip. There, RU will explore the city, going on a bike tour as well as other excursions. The team will play one final game against a local academy and watch one more professional match in UE Cormella vs. Gimnastic.

“Our team is very fortunate and excited for our Foreign Tour to Spain this upcoming March,” McElderry said. “We had a few special alums step up and help our program raise the funds needed to allow our team to have this life experience. We are so thankful to the support of the Edelstein Family, the Miller Family, Jeff and Lisa Sinko, as well as an anonymous gift for making this once in a lifetime trip happen. We will use this time to expose the group to a new culture, grow as individuals, volunteer our time, enjoy each other’s company and represent Rutgers on the international stage. I am very proud of our program and look forward to bringing this quality group of student-athletes to Europe this March.”
