Premier League clubs are reportedly set for a summer of low spending because they are ‘terrified’ of breaching financial rules.

The Premier League‘s FFP regulations have come into focus over recent months, with Everton deducted 10 points back in November for breaking them – although this punishment was reduced to six on appeal.

Last month, they were then charged again – alongside Nottingham Forest – for breaching top flight spending rules with both clubs waiting to find out their fate. Premier League clubs are allowed to lose £105m over a three-year rolling time frame, with the end of each accounting year coming on June 30.

Meanwhile, since Chelsea were taken over by a Todd Boehly-led consortium in May 2022, the Blues have spent more than £1billion in the transfer market as they’ve looked to revamp their squad.

They have slightly spread the cost by using amortization to pay the fees over several years by handing lengthy contracts to players, but the Blues are still the highest spenders in the top flight during that period.

And, according to The Times, top flight club executives have warned of a summer of limited transfer spending due to their fears of breaking financial rules and being faced with a points deduction. 

The report claims that even though both Forest and Everton are already facing one charge, they are two clubs at risk of another potential charge.
