WASHINGTON, D.C. – D.C. United have announced today the naming of Audi Field’s broadcast booth to “The Dave Johnson Broadcast Booth” in honor of legendary Black-and-Red broadcast voice, Dave Johnson. Johnson has called games for D.C. United since the club’s inception in 1996. At halftime of the home opener against New England on Feb. 24, Dave Johnson will be honored at midfield alongside fellow D.C. United legends. “Dave Johnson has been a cornerstone of the D.C. United community since our inaugural season in 1996,” Danita Johnson, D.C. United President of Business Operations, said. “I knew Dave for years even before I became president of the club and he is truly a DC sports legend through his work with D.C. United in addition to the Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals. His iconic voice has narrated this club’s history from RFK Stadium and four MLS Cups, all the way to Audi Field, our soccer-specific stadium that opened in 2018. More importantly, Dave Johnson has truly championed what it means to represent D.C. United. His love for this club and for the community has inspired many and it was only natural for us to rename our broadcast booth to honor the profound impact he’s had on the DMV.”

Johnson started his Black-and-Red career calling the first match in D.C. United history on April 6, 1996 against the San Jose Clash (now the San Jose Earthquakes). He is one of the few local broadcasters who has covered Major League Soccer since the inaugural season. Johnson’s voice and iconic “it’s in the net” goal call have been synonymous with D.C. United since the first ever goal scored in MLS history by forward Raul Diaz Arce in 1996. Others include the first ever goal at Audi Field in 2018 from midfielder Yamil Asad and the viral Wayne Rooney slide tackle and cross-field pass to Luciano Acosta for a 96th-minute game-winner in Aug. 2018.

Dave Johnson will be honored at midfield at halftime of the game against the New England Revolution on Saturday, Feb. 24. He will be joined by former D.C. United players Marco Etcheverry, Bill Hamid, John Harkes, Jaime Moreno, and Chris Odoi-Atsem. In addition, broadcast-call partner and former Black-and-Red defender Devon McTavish will join Johnson on the field at halftime.
