Earthquakes Acquire Defender Vítor Costa from C.S. Marítimo

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club acquired defender Vítor Costa on a permanent transfer from Portuguese side C.S. Marítimo and signed him to a contract through the 2025 season with a club option for 2026, pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC).


“We’re excited to have Vítor join the fold and bolster a back line that was among the league’s best last season,” said Earthquakes general manager Chris Leitch. “He brings Portuguese first-division experience and the type of versatility that will help us in both defense and attack. I’m looking forward to seeing him excel in this league.”

Costa, 29, appeared in 72 matches in Liga Portugal and Liga Portugal 2 since joining Marítimo in 2021. Normally playing at left back, he scored twice and tallied five assists for Marítimo.

The Valente, Brazil, native began his youth career with hometown club E.C. Bahia, working his way up to the first team for his professional debut in 2015. After making two goals and three assists in 17 appearances that season, he signed with Esporte Club Internacional in 2016.

Costa would make 110 appearances for four different clubs on loan from Internacional, including Avaí FC in Brazil, Portuguese clubs F.C. Arouca and C.D. Aves, and French side RC Lens in 2019-20, the latter of which he helped earn promotion to Ligue 1. He subsequently joined Centro Sportivo Alagoano in Brazil in 2021 before making the move to Marítimo.
