Club America vs CF Monterrey

Salvador Reyes

Two Liga MX giants are set to do battle and renew their rivalry, as Club America play host to CF Monterrey on Saturday night at the Estadio Azteca.

It’s a top-of-the table clash between two Concacaf behemoths, as both sides have collected 10 points from their first four games of the season with Rayados leading only on goals scored with eight.

America kicked off their Apertura campaign with a 2-0 triumph at Tijuana, followed by two more wins of the same scoreline against Queretaro and Juarez. America were held to a point last time out on the road at Necaxa.

Rayados began their season with a 2-0 home triumph over Puebla and another 2-0 victory over Santos Laguna. US men’s national team forward Brandon Vazquez has enjoyed a terrific start in Liga MX, bagging three goals in his side’s last two games including a draw vs Queretaro and a win over San Luis.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of America vs Rayados.

Center-back Nester Araujo is set to miss the clash as he’s still recovering from an LCL tear that was sustained during the 2023 Clausura in September. America boss Andre Jardine will look to lean on the likes of Israel Reyes and Sebastian Caceres to shore up the center of defense.

An ankle injury sees winger Leonard Suarez miss out, as Alex Zendejas and Brian Rodriguez may see more minutes out wide with his absence.

Midfielder Richard Sanchez misses out via suspension after picking up a red card last time out vs Necaxa in just the 15th minute. Jonathan dos Santos, Alvaro Fidalgo and Diego Valdes are set to hold down the middle of the park in the meantime.

Club America predicted lineup vs CF Monterrey (4-4-2): Malagon; Calderon, Reyes, Juarez, Lichnovsky; Valdes, dos Santos, Reyes, Fidalgo; Quinones, Martin.

Jesús Gallardo

Jesus Gallardo’s knee injury sees him unavailable for selection, meaning Gerardo Arteaga, who was just signed from Belgian side Genk, could be in the running for a first start.

A muscle injury is expected to prevent midfielder Luis Romo as he’s still on the road to recovery. Rayados boss Fernando ‘Tano’ Ortiz will more than likely entrust Omar Govea and Jorge Rodriguez to lead the way in the midfield.
