Calgary, AB – Cavalry FC of the Canadian Premier League (CPL) today announced that Assistant Coach and Technical Director Leon Hapgood has departed the club.

Hapgood joined Cavalry FC in its inaugural 2019 season as a member of the coaching staff and has been the lead assistant coach since 2022. He now joins Cavalry FC alumni Mo Farsi and Joel Waterman in MLS as the newly appointed first team Assistant Coach of New York City FC.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire Cavalry FC organization for the support they have shown me throughout the last 5 years,” said Hapgood. “From the players, staff & ownership group, it has been a pleasure to work for such a great club. I would like also to thank the fans for their support during this time and I wish everyone at the club the very best of luck in the future.”

Hapgood was a key member in Cavalry’s immense 2023 title-winning season, through his set piece tactics and leadership alongside Wheeldon Jr. on the touchline. Cavalry FC clinched the CPL Shield after a successful 16 wins, clinching 55 points – implementing a 13-point gap between themselves and runners-up Forge FC.

Following the regular season, Cavalry FC advanced to the 2023 CPL Playoff Final, further adding to a memorable 2023 season.

“Leon has been an incredible driver of the game here in Calgary and Alberta,” said Tommy Wheeldon Jr., Head Coach & General Manager, Cavalry FC. “His creativity, drive and enthusiasm have helped us not only bring the professional game to Calgary, but also help take us to new adventures, such as Concacaf Champions Cup. I have had the privilege of working alongside him for 15 years and I’m proud to see his talents being recognized by what he brings to the wonderful game. He is a brilliant coach and a terrific personality that I’m sure will do great in his next chapter in the MLS.”

Cavalry FC is proud of the opportunities that are being created for players and staff and would like to thank Leon for all his contributions over the past five seasons. The club wish him the best of luck on his journey with NYCFC.
