Napoli have reportedly opened talks with Aston Villa to try and bring in Leander Denconcker on loan until the end of the season. 

Dendoncker, whose contract runs until 2026, has made just one Premier League start this season but has racked up 15 appearances overall. 

Napoli are ninth in Serie, albeit only three points off the top four, and are lookig to get their season back on track. 

Villa are plentifully stocked at the heart of midfield, with Douglaz Luiz, John McGinn, Youri Tielemans, and Nicolo Zaniolo ahead of Dendoncker in the pecking order. 

Napoli and Villa are discussing a potential deal but no agreement has been reached, as per The Athletic

The Italians are still reeling from a 1-0 defeat to Inter Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana on Monday night, with a stoppage-time Lautaro Martinez goal putting them to the sword.  

Dendoncker’s only league start this season saw him score in Aston Villa’s 3-2 defeat against Manchester United in December. 

The 28-year-old joined Aston Villa from rivals Wolves in a £15million switch in 2022 and was a more regular player for them last season. 

Dendoncker, a 32-time Belgian international, has had a decent Premier League career and accumulated good Eeropean experience in his stints with Anderlecht, Wolves, and Villa. 

While Napoli are looking to bolster their midfield, they could have some fire-fighting to do up top after some explosive comments from key man Victor Osimhen.

Osimhen, who scored 31 goals in all competitions last season to fire Napoli to the Serie A title, dropped hints about a future in English football.

He told CBS Sports: ‘A rumour is going around about me linked with the Premier League….
