Gary Neville believes Kalvin Phillips going on loan to West Ham from Manchester City is a ‘good move’ for him ahead of Euro 2024.

The pundit thinks Phillips fits the style of Hammers boss David Moyes but was surprised things didn’t work out for him at City.

West Ham have agreed a deal to take the midfielder, 28, until the end of the season with an option to buy and will pay the majority of his wages while he is on loan.

Neville told Sky Sports: ‘He needs to play football, that’s for sure.

‘We remember he was a major England player, someone who I think we thought would do well at Manchester City. You normally think that City don’t make mistakes in the transfer market.

‘It’s just not worked out for him there. Obviously, they’ve got fantastic options in midfield.

‘But West Ham losing Declan Rice, I think it’s a good move for West Ham. It’s a good move for Kalvin Phillips. I hope he can stay fit and get a lot of football in before the Euros in the summer.

‘He’ll fit in there no problem. He’s a really good player and a good, solid David Moyes-type to have on the pitch.’

Pep Guardiola’s side signed Phillips from Leeds United for £45million in the summer of 2022 but his first year was marred by injury and he was only a bit-part player.

Phillips has only started two games in all competitions this season and has come off the bench four times in the Premier League.

Such meagre game time has not yet jeopardised his favour with England manager Gareth Southgate.

He played in both international friendlies against Scotland and Australia earlier in the season, playing the full match against the former.

However, the accelerating progress of Curtis Jones at Liverpool has given Southgate more food for thought.
